ITTA BENA, Miss. - Ayonna Cotten scored six points in the final six seconds of the game including the game-winning shot as Mississippi Valley State women's basketball rallied from a four-point deficit in the final seconds to defeat Florida A&M, 71-70 in the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex on Friday.
The Devilettes won their first game of the season and improves to 1-6 and the Rattlers fall to 2-5 overall record.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- FAMU's Jasmine Ballew hit a three-pointer with 14-seconds left in the fourth quarter as the Rattlers increased their lead to four, 69-65.
- MVSU called their final timeout, quickly fouled and sent FAMU to the line. Their strategy worked as the Rattlers missed both free throws attempts, but on the second miss, Ayonna Cotten went coast-to-coast and was fouled beyond the three-point line.
- In front of the home crowd, Cotten remained poised and made all three of her attempts.
- Now the Devilettes trailed by one, 69-68 and went with the same strategy of forcing FAMU to make their free throws. MVSU fouled with five seconds left on the clock, as FAMU split the pair and led 70-68.
- With no timeouts, Cotten received the inbound pass and dribbled just over half court and drained a three-pointer at the buzzer sealing the come from behind win for MVSU's first victory of the season.
- MVSU trailed the final 2:47 of the fourth quarter but used a late rally for a 71-70 home win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
- Diamond Wraggs finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season.
- Ayonna Cotten had 13 points, three rebounds, and three assists. Cotten has scored in double figures in all seven games this season.
- Erin Smith scored 12 points and Angelica Darcus chipped in a season-high eight points.
- Shelli Thigpen recorded a season-high 11 rebounds
- Ronnie Williams finished with six points off of a perfect 6-for-6 on free throws while leading the defense with three steals.
- The Devilettes had two players record double-digit rebounds in a game for the first time this season; Thigpen (11) and Wraggs (11).
- Against FAMU, the Devilettes notched season-highs in three-point field goal percentage (.571), free throws made (19), free throws attempted (23), free throw percentage (.826), rebounds (49), and steals (11).
