RUSTON, La. (February 17, 2019) – Sophomore Deshonte Smith was selected to the Louisiana Tech Invitational All-Tournament Team after leading the Devilettes with four hits batting .333 with a .583 slugging percentage. Smith added a pair of RBI and hit her first home run of the season against Wichita State.
Mississippi Valley State (0-9) struck out a season-high five batters in their matchup against Abilene Christian. Against Wichita State, the Devilettes homered twice, hit a triple and registered a season-best five RBI. Junior Lexany Terrones was second on the team with three hits and two RBI hitting .250 at the plate while freshman Jaylon Davis also had three hits including a triple against the Shockers and scored a pair of runs.
Louisiana Tech 15, Mississippi Valley State 0
The Devilettes finished with three hits against the Lady Techsters in their first of four games over the weekend. In the first inning, Smith singled to left field followed by freshman Jewel Unga singling to left-center. Freshman Jade Arroyo singled to left field in the fourth inning. LA Tech scored three runs in the first, 10 in the second inning and two in the fourth inning shutting out the Devilettes 15-0. Freshman relief pitcher Daisy Page went 3.0 innings striking out one for MVSU.
Abilene Christian 9, Mississippi Valley State 3
Sophomore Alyssa Montes pitched MVSU's first complete game of the season striking out a season-best five batters in a 9-3 loss to Abilene Christian. Montes walked four surrendering 13 hits and seven earned runs. Freshman Cailyn Peterson went 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI while freshman Demi Slater doubled and scored a run for the Devilettes against Abilene Christian.
Peterson singled up the middle in the third inning and advanced to second on a bunt by junior Jaime Parmely. Sophomore Kennedy Lester blasted an RBI single to center field scoring Peterson tying the game up at 1-1. ACU tacked on three runs in the fifth inning, but in the bottom half of the inning, the Devilettes scored a pair of runs on two hits and an error. Slater doubled down the left field line and then Peterson recorded her second hit of the morning an RBI single to left-center field sending Slater home. The next run scored on a fielding error allowing pinch runner freshman Laeni Terrones to score.
ACU extending their advantage with a run in the seventh inning downing MVSU, 9-3.
Wichita State 11, Mississippi Valley State 5
Jaylon Davis was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate knocking in a triple and scoring two runs against Wichita State. Le. Terrones and Smith each brought in a pair of runs while both Smith and senior Dejanae Gage went yard in the same inning.
MVSU trimmed the early Shockers 7-0 lead in the fourth inning with three hits leading to three runs. Smith hit her first home run of the season a two-run shot to left-center scoring Le. Terrones who led the inning off with a walk. Three spots later, Gage also homered in the inning, a solo to left field recording her first home run of the year making it 7-3.
In the fifth, Davis singled to left field and later scored on an RBI double to left-center by Le. Terrones. Davis recorded the first Devilette triple of the season in the seventh inning against the Shockers. Then Le. Terrones grounded out for an RBI scoring Davis for their fifth run of the game.
Junior Andrea Elmore took the mound for MVSU in the second inning and finished the game walking four and holding Wichita State to only four hits.
Southeast Missouri 7, Mississippi Valley State 0
The Devilettes finished with four hits falling 7-0 to Southeast Missouri in their fourth and final game of the weekend tournament. Montes fanned one batter in six innings on the mound while allowing three earned runs.
Le. Terrones singled to left field and then Smith struck a shot to right field in the first inning. In the third, Le. Terrones laid a bunt and in the sixth inning Smith singled up the middle for the only MVSU production at the plate. Southeast Missouri scored one run in the first inning, three in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth for the victory.
MVSU returns to action hosting SWAC foe Grambling State in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday, Feb. 20
