Devilettes Drop Road Contest to Alabama A&M, 78-70

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (February 9, 2019) – Four Devilettes scored in double figures paced by freshman Sydnie Ward's 15 points off the Mississippi Valley State bench in a 78-70 road setback to Alabama A&M Saturday afternoon. Ward made 7-of-10 field goals leading the MVSU bench that registered 35 combined points.

MVSU (4-17, 3-7) recorded their second-highest field goal percentage (47 percent) of the season hitting 26-of-55 attempts from the field. At the line, the Devilettes converted on 15-of-24 (62 percent) free throws and made 3-of-11 (27 percent) three-pointers. AAMU made 13-of-28 (46 percent) free throws but held the advantage over MVSU in both field goals 30-60 (50 percent) and three-point shooting 5-12 (41 percent).

The Devilettes allowed AAMU to close the opening period on a 14-4 run that resulted in an 18-9 lead for the Bulldogs entering the second quarter. MVSU's bench scored all nine points led by Ward's five and senior Kristy Parker and junior Nyla Smith each scoring two points. Parker added six points to her total in the second quarter as MVSU led for a brief stretch 19-18, at the 5:49 mark. Once again, AAMU ended the period on a run (12-4) and carried a 30-23 advantage into halftime.

Senior Desiray Mosley opened the third quarter draining back-to-back three-pointers. By the 5:11 mark the Devilettes tied the game at 38 on a pair of made free throws by senior Makayla Bonner. MVSU made 8-of-10 field goals in the third keeping within a distance of AAMU. Heading into the final period down by six (50-44), MVSU was unable to keep the Bulldogs scorers away from the basket. Deshawna Harper had 12 points in the fourth quarter for AAMU helping her squad build a double-digit lead. Senior LaKendra Bassett scored all 11 of her points in the fourth quarter as MVSU came within an eight-point margin, falling 78-70 to the Bulldogs.

Mosley had 12 points hitting both of her three-pointers, Bassett and senior Jazmin Holmon led MVSU in rebounds with six each and Parker finished with 11 points.

AAMU's Harper finished with a game-high 18 points while Nigeria Jones had 15 points and Tierra Dark scored 13 points.

The Devilettes return to action on Monday, Feb. 11 at Alabama State in Montgomery Ala. at 5:30 p.m.
