BATON ROUGE, La. (March 12, 2019) - Senior Erin Smith scored 11 points in a 51-44 loss to Southern in the quarterfinals round of the 2019 SWAC Women's Basketball Tournament Tuesday. Mississippi Valley State led with just over two minutes to play but was unable to pull off the upset over the No. 1 Lady Jaguars.The Devilettes ends their season with an overall record of 6-24 after posting a season-low point total of 44.
Smith was the only MVSU player to reach double-figure scoring hitting 4-of-10 shots from the field. Senior LaKendra Bassett led the team in rebounding with 10, recorded five steals and scored eight points. Senior Desiray Mosley also scored eight points converting 4-of-6 free throws. Senior Kristy Parker scored seven points and junior Jazmin Holmon grabbed six rebounds and added five points.
MVSU trailed 27-17 with 5:24 left in the third quarter. The Devilettes closed the period on an 11-2 run behind knocking down four free throws, a pair of layups and a three-pointer by freshman Ronnie Williams. Williams long-range jumper gave MVSU a 30-29 lead with 29-seconds left in the quarter.
Bassett and Smith pushed the Devilettes to a 36-32 lead early in the fourth period hitting a pair of jump shots. Southern battled back and took a 37-36 advantage, but Mosley's jumper with 3:27 gave MVSU a 38-37 lead. Mosley split a pair of free throws at the 2:18 mark and gave the Devilettes a 39-38 lead.
Southern's Skylar O'Bear drained a three-pointer with 1:56 left on the clock giving her team a 41-39 lead. Bassett answered by tying the game at 41 on the next possession, but Brittany Rose hit Southern's second consecutive three-pointer pushing out to a 44-41 lead with just over a minute in regulation.
MVSU turned it over and then Southern converted a pair from the line with 26-seconds making it a 46-41 contest. Smith made a three-pointer down the stretch with 12-seconds as the top-seeded Lady Jaguars held on for a 51-44 victory.
