BATON ROUGE, La. (March 22, 2019) – Mississippi Valley State came up short in game one of a weekend SWAC series at Southern on Friday at Jaguar Field. MVSU drops to 2-20 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
Senior pitcher Alejandra Salazar struck out a season-high eight batters allowing no earned runs. Salazar tossed six innings walked two giving up four total hits.
The Devilettes trailed 2-0 heading into the top of the sixth inning after the Lady Jaguars scored a pair of runs off of a fielding error by MVSU.
Davis walked to lead the inning off and then advanced to second on a groundout. A throwing error by the SU infield allowed Davis to round the bases scoring from second base trimming the deficit to 2-1.
Salazar breezed through the bottom of the sixth but in the seventh inning, MVSU failed to reach base and suffered a 2-1 defeat in the opening game of the weekend series.
The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, March 23 beginning at 1 p.m. to close out the series.
