JACKSON, Miss. - It was an abrupt end to their season as Mississippi Valley State Devilettes softball team split with the Jackson State Tigers. Still, their 2019 campaign ended on a positive note with a 10-7 extra inning victory after being eliminated from the SWAC Tournament in game one.
Jaylon Davis (Murrieta, Calif.) led the offense with five base hits and three RBI's on the day. She was aided in game two by four RBI's from Miranda Sandoval (San Antonio, Tex.) and a 2-for-5 day with three RBI's and two runs scored by Kailyn Dunn (Tuscaloosa, Ala.).
On the mound, Daisy Page (Anchorage, Ak.) went all nine innings with six strikeouts. She finishes her freshman season with three wins in the last four games.
The Devilettes fell behind in game one before rallying to tie in the fifth. A single by Davis drove in one, followed by a game tying RBI from Jade Arroyo (Texas City, Tex.). Jackson State responded with a four-run bottom half capped by a three-run homer. Valley got back-to-back doubles from Demi Slater (Dickinson, Tex.) and Briana Alston (Rocklin, Calif.) in the sixth, but the Tigers stalled the comeback to eventually take the game 6-4.
Playing for pride in game two the Devilettes locked in for battle. They scored three runs over two innings, with Sandoval knocking in a pair with a single. The lead was built up to 5-2 before Jackson State mustered a rally to tie the contest after five.
Davis picked up another RBI hit for a 6-5 lead in the sixth, but the Tigers once again rallied in the seventh to force extras. After Valley scored in the eighth only to see Jackson State rally again, they secured the victory with a three-run ninth. Dunn's two-run double proved to be the knockout blow.
Valley ends the season with a 10-31 record.
