HOUSTON, Texas – The shutout streak continued into its fifth straight match for Mississippi Valley State soccer. On Sunday (Sept. 29) the Devilettes fell 2-0 to the Texas Southern University Tigers.
With the defeat, Valley now stands at 1-6-1 (0-2 SWAC) this year.
Shay McCool (Chino, Calif.) and
Beatriz Kretteis (Sao Paulo, Brazil) each connected on two shots, both at the goal.
Kristien Lindo (Whitby, Ont., Can.) also added a shot on goal. Goalkeeper
McKenzie McCarthy (Olive Branch, Miss.) helped keep Valley in the game with 16 saves.
The first half was relatively quiet. McCarthy kept seven shots out of the back of the net, and the match remained scoreless. Valley got a shot off early in the first half but were unable to convert a couple corner kicks as the half progressed.
A couple of quick Tiger shots were saved by McCarthy to open the second half. In the 58
th minute, Valley got a golden opportunity when they were awarded a penalty, but McCool's shot was saved.
10 minutes later, Texas Southern produced a goal to break the deadlock. A second goal in the 83
rd minute put the game away.
The next four contests for the Devilettes are home, beginning with Grambling State on October 3
rd.
