ITTA BENA, Miss. – The Mississippi Valley State University softball program has gained a new leader in the clubhouse as former Volunteer State Community College and Florida A&M Coach Jimmy Buckner takes control of the Delta Devilettes effective immediately.
Â
A two-time graduate of Trevecca Nazarene University (Bachelor's in human resources, Master's in organizational leadership), Buckner spent his first 20 seasons patrolling the dugout as an assistant at Volunteer State in Gallatin, Tennessee. During his tenure, he helped the Pioneers to over 500 wins which included a 2011 NJCAA Region 7 Championship plus a NJCAA Tournament berth and subsequent #16 ranking in the country.
Â
The Greenbrier, Tennessee native would accept the same position at Florida A&M in the summer/fall of 2019, getting only 20 games into his time with the Lady Rattlers before COVID-19 shut the sports world down. During the pandemic, he got a job with United Airlines until landing here in The Delta.
Â
The avid Tennessee Titans football fan is married to his wife, Marsha, and has a 16-year-old son named Wesley.
