With Morgan On The Mound, Devilettes Shuts Out Bethune-Cookman

ITTA BENA, Miss. - The Mississippi Valley State Devilettes softball program spilt a doubleheader against Bethune-Cookman Wildcats on Monday to collect its first win of the season. 

Game 1

The Devilettes were outdone by the Lady Wildcats, 6-3. 

The Lady Wildcats got on the board in the first inning. Desirae Martinez drove in one with a single and took the lead for good with three runs in the fourth inning. In the fourth, an error scored one run for B-CU, and Essence Gibbs singled on a 1-2 count, scoring one run.

Morgan Gutierrez was on the rubber for the Devilettes. The righty went seven innings, allowing six runs on eight hits and striking out four.

Kaitlyn Harper, Keisha White, and Aulora Edwards all had one hit to lead the Devilettes.

Game 2

Morgan Gutierrez threw a gem to the Devilettes, allowing zero runs and besting the Lady Wildcats by a score of 1-0.

The pitching was strong on both sides. Gutierrez struck out four, while Halyne Gonzalez sat down four.

In the first inning, MVSU got its offense started with Isabella Robinson with a hit into a fielder's choice, scoring one run.

Gutierrez toed the rubber for the Devilettes. Gutierrez went six and two-thirds innings, allowing zero runs on four hits, striking out four, and walking one.

The Devilettes totaled seven hits in the game. Keisha White and Jade Smith each racked up multiple hits for MVSU. Smith and White each collected two hits to lead the Devilettes.
 

Up Next: 

The Devilettes series against the Lady Wildcats will continue on Tuesday, April 11, at MVSU Softball Field. The first pitch set for 1:00 p.m.
