Mississippi Valley State Devilettes Drop Heartbreaking Loss Against Alabama State To Open Conference Play

ITTA BENA, Miss. -  Mississippi Valley State University's women's basketball falls short to Alabama State University in a 57-54 heartbreaking defeat at the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex on Saturday night, opening Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play.
 
Sh'Diamond McKnight was the lone player in double figures for the Devilettes finishing with 18 points and four steals.
 
McKnight scored a layup with 0:54 seconds remaining on the clock to bring MVSU within three to make the score 57-54 as ASU leads.
 
After MVSU makes a defensive stop and leads into a fast break, a questionable offensive foul on MVSU gives ASU the possession.
 
MVSU forces ASU to make a turnover with 0:22 seconds remaining. 

Following a timeout, MVSU missed two 3-pointers with an opportunity to tie the game.
 
Amberly Brown finished with nine points and seven rebounds and Lizzie Walker finished with 6 points and a game high 10 rebounds.
 
 
How It Happened
  • The lead saw five lead changes and five ties with Mississippi Valley State held as much as a seven-point lead with 8:56 in the second quarter. Alabama State holding as much as a 14-point lead (2:36 in the third quarter). 
  • Mississippi Valley State finished the night shooting 30.4 (17-of-56) percent from the floor and 6.7 (1-of-15) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 61.3 (19-of-31) percent from the free throw line.
  • MVSU used an 10-2 run to start the fourth quarter and cut the ASU lead to 50-47.
  • Mississippi Valley State led Alabama State in fast break points 15-3.
  • The Hornets won the rebounding battle 43-37.
  • Mississippi Valley State cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 15 offensive boards in the game.
  • Sh'Diamond McKnight scored in double figures for the 10th time in 14 games this season.
