LORMAN, MS – February 6, 2025 – The Mississippi Valley State Devilettes (3-18, 2-8 SWAC) clawed their way to a resilient 63-59 road victory over the Alcorn State Lady Braves (6-15, 4-6 SWAC) at the Davey L. Whitney Health & Physical Education Complex.
Despite trailing at halftime, MVSU stormed back with a dominant third quarter, limiting Alcorn to just five points in the frame. The Devilettes capitalized on their defensive intensity, forcing 22 turnovers and grabbing 13 steals, which proved to be the difference-maker in a tightly contested SWAC showdown.
Maxey, Reed Lead the Charge
D'Yanna Maxey led MVSU with a game-high 16 points, adding four steals and two assists. Jaylia Reed followed with 13 points, knocking down key free throws late in the game to maintain the lead. Kearra Jones also provided a spark, chipping in 10 points and six rebounds.
In the paint, Clemisha Prackett dominated the boards with 13 rebounds while contributing nine points, giving the Devilettes a much-needed edge in second-chance opportunities.
Turning Point: Lockdown Third Quarter
The Devilettes' defense took over in the third quarter, holding Alcorn to just one made field goal while forcing multiple turnovers. This defensive stand swung the momentum in MVSU's favor, as they entered the fourth quarter with a slim but crucial lead.
Late Free Throws Seal the Win
Despite a late surge from the Lady Braves, MVSU remained poised at the free-throw line, knocking down 26 of 40 attempts for the game. Their ability to draw fouls and convert at the stripe ultimately sealed the hard-earned conference victory.
