ITTA BENA -- The Mississippi Valley State baseball team fell 7-2 Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader against Alabama State.
Edmund Cheatham accounted for both Delta Devil hits. He knocked in two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning tie the game at 2. But the Hornets put up five runs in the final three innings to win their fourth conference game of the season.
Trey Lacy (1-5) suffered the loss, working 6.2 innings and giving up five runs on nine hits with four strikeouts. Cody Parker worked 2.1 innings in relief for MVSU. He gave up two hits and two runs with one strikeout.
Joel Alvira (2-2) earned the win for the Hornets.
Game 2
The Delta Devils (6-17, 6-5 SWAC) poured in three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to secure a 4-3 win over the Hornets thanks to a two-run single by Luke Brumfield and the game-winning base hit from Billy Linney.
Chris Broadway (1-3) earned his first win of the season, working the final inning in relief. Kameron Stady started the game and worked eight innings. He gave up three runs on nine hits with four strikeouts.
Brumfield, Trey Lacy and Joseph Germaine each had two hits apiece for the Delta Devils.
MVSU and ASU will close out the weekend Sunday with the final game set for 1 p.m.
