TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The Mississippi Valley State baseball team made history here Wednesday.
The Delta Devils (9-29, 7-11 SWAC) became the first MVSU men's team to ever beat an SEC opponent following a stunning 8-3 victory over Alabama in front of an announced crowd of 2,908.
"This is a big step for our team and this program," said MVSU coach Doug Shanks. "Now we just have to keep this momentum going for the rest of the year."
MVSU defeated the Crimson Tide (14-24) in game two of its doubleheader at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. Alabama won the series opener, 8-0.
Despite the loss in game one, the Delta Devils shook it off and pulled off one of the biggest victories in school history.
After tying the game at 1 in the third inning on a Michael Lowe sacrifice fly, Valley put its foot on the gas in the fifth inning -- scoring six runs. Lowe, Trey Lacy and Seth Milliorn started the inning off with a single apiece before Joseph Germaine plated the first run thanks to an Alabama error. Nikolas Fangonilo kept Valley's hot streak going with a RBI single to left field that put the visiting Delta Devils up 3-1. Luke Brumfield was the next at bat and brought in two additional runs on a single to center field.
Demetrins Bonner, on a sacrifice bunt, and Clay Perry, on a fielder's choice, brought in the Delta Devils' final two runs of the game.
David Lostra (3-7) earned the win, working six innings while giving up just one earned run on just two hits.
Lacy and Milliorn had two hits apiece for the Delta Devils.
MVSU is set to host Alabama A&M this weekend, starting on Saturday with a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
