STARKVILLE -- The Mississippi Valley State soccer team opened the 2012 season with a 2-0 loss to South Alabama on Friday and a 6-1 defeat versus Tennessee-Martin on Sunday at the Bulldog Classic.

MVSU freshman Nykosi Simmons, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, scored the Devilettes lone goal over the weekend on Sunday.

"I felt we did well in our first game," said MVSU head coach Sonia Curvelo. "This allows us to see where we are and the things we need to improve on as we get into conference play.

"They only had a few opportunities and were able to capitalize on them. Overall, I am pleased with my players first performance of the season."

MVSU will host Central Arkansas on Friday at 6 p.m.
