Box Score MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Brandon Stansell had a night to remember.
Unfortunately, Mississippi Valley State’s senior running back and the Delta Devils couldn’t add a victory along with it.
Stansell picked up a career-high 167 yards on the ground, despite a 29-7 loss to Alabama State on Saturday night.
The Hornets were hot early and got off to a 20-0 first quarter lead using three rushing scores, two from quarterback Greg Jenkins. Isaiah Crowell added the other score on a 15-yard scamper with 4:32 left in the first period.
Crowell then picked up his second TD of the game on a 3-yard run with 9:57 left in the second.
Trey Bateaste scored MVSU’s lone TD of the game early in the third quarter when he pounded it in from a yard out.
ASU’s Bobby Wenzig ended the night’s scoring with a 37-yard field goal with 2:06 remaining in the third quarter.
MVSU quarterback Eddie Ivory, who started in place of injured Garrick Jones, went 12-of-27 for 48 yards and an interception.
Meanwhile, ASU’s quarterback Jenkins went 13-of-21 for 130 yards with a pair of interceptions. He led the Hornets with 72 rushing yards and two TDs.
ASU outgained the Delta Devils 297 to 242.
Carlos Hollis and Rico Mazique each had an interception for MVSU. Robert Simpson had six tackles and a sack for the Delta Devils.
It’ll be a short week for MVSU as the Delta Devils will be at Southern on Thursday for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff on ESPNU.
