Tigers slip past Delta Devils

Box Score ITTA BENA -- In front of a season's best crowd of 10,042, the Mississippi Valley State football team was upended by rival Jackson State Saturday 26-17, as the Tigers extended their win streak over the Delta Devils to 19.

The Tigers (5-2, 5-0 SWAC) remained unbeated in conference play thanks to nine fourth quarter points. JSU recorded a safety after a blocked punt and Zach Pendleton's 19-yard TD catch extended the Tigers' lead.

"They made the plays, we didn't," said MVSU coach Karl Morgan. "We didn't make the plays that we needed to. We have to make those plays if you want to beat a team that you haven't beaten in a long time."

MVSU stayed on JSU's heels the entire game. The game was tied at 10 at halftime. The Delta Devils struck first with a 22-yard TD pass from Jeremy Collins to Cortez Frizell. Then, a 17-yard TD scamper from JSU quarterback Clayton Moore tied the game 7.

The two teams both made 34-yard field goals in the second quarter that tied the game at 10 before intermission.

But the Tigers controlled most of the second half, using a pair of TD passes to Pendleton to stray away from the Delta Devils. MVSU's lone second half score came on a 19-yard TD catch by Julian Stafford, who finished with a team-high eight receptions for 95 yards on the day.

Collins, who started in place of the injured Patrick Ivy, went 17-of-38 for 217 yards and two TDs.

Moore paced JSU on the ground with 88 yards and a TD. He also went 11-of-23 through the air for 168 yards and a pair of TDs. Pendleton had five receptions for 112 yards and two TDs.

Antonio Benson led MVSU's defense with 11 tackles while Brandon Powe added seven and a sack.
