Golden Lions spoil MVSU's homecoming

Box Score ITTA BENA -- It wasn't the homecoming Mississippi Valley State hoped for.

Benjamin Anderson and the Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions spoiled MVSU's annual event with a 38-18 win over the Delta Devils Saturday at Rice-Totten Stadium in front of 8,632 fans.

Anderson threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 123 and two additional TDs to give UAPB its first victory of the season. Valley, meanwhile, lost its third straight game.

There was some positives for MVSU (1-7, 1-5 SWAC), including a standout performance by quarterback Patrick Ivy who finished 13-of-33 for 233 yards and three TDs. Julian Stafford, Richard Drake and Kenneth Dabney each caught a TD for the Delta Devils, who now will start preparation for Grambling State.

The Golden Lions outgained Valley 484 to 296. Cody Swain, who finished with six catches for 153 yards, caught a pair of TDs for UAPB.

The Delta Devils cut the lead to 31-18 early in the fourth quarter on a 20-yard TD connection between Ivy and Stafford. But the Golden Lions answered with the finishing touch on a 86-yard TD catch and run by Swain.

Robert Simpson led the MVSU defense with nine tackles (3 for loss) while Antonio Benson chipped in eight tackles (2.5 for loss), a sack and a forced fumble.

Valley's Avery Boykin, James Atkinson and Kevin Eugene each had an interception.

The Delta Devils will be on the road next week, Nov. 2, at Grambling State for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
