Delta Devils spoil A&M's homecoming

Box Score NORMAL, Ala. -- MIssissippi Valley State spoiled Alabama A&M's homecoming Saturday by upending the Bulldogs, 28-9, in front of an announced crowd of 12,873 at Louis Crews Stadium.

The win marked the first of the season for the Delta Devils (1-4, 1-2 SWAC), which stops a 4-game skid and gives Valley some much-needed confidence heading into next week's showdown against heated rival Jackson State.

Valley's defense stuffed A&M's passing attack, allowing just three completed passes and four interceptions. Terrance Hudson, who played his first game as a defensive back against Southern on Sept. 21, had a pair of interceptions, including one on the final play of the game.

The Delta Devils lost their starting quarterback Patrick Ivy to an injury in the second quarter. But the junior college transfer did some damage beforehand, completing 4-of-5 passes for 80 yards and a touchdown along with 31 yards on the ground. MVSU scored on its first drive on the game on a 21-yard pass from Richard Drake. Cortez Frizell followed it up two minutes later with a 3-yard plunge for a TD.

A fumbled punt return in the end zone late in the first quarter gave A&M its first points of the game but the Delta Devils answered soon after with a 52-yard interception return for a TD by Avery Boykin. It marked Boykin's third pick of the season.

The Bulldogs' lone TD came with 2 minutes left in the first half on a 14-yard run by Brandon Eldemire.

MVSU went into halftime with a 21-9 lead after a 37-yard field goal by Cherchen Galon. The Delta Devils would stay out of the end zone until 9:32 left in the game when Jeremy Collins connected with Kenneth Dabney for a 42-yard TD.

Collins went 5-of-13 for 74 yards and a TD while Cortez Frizell paced the Delta Devils with 44 yards and a score on 16 carries.

Antonio Benson led Valley with 10 tackles and a forced fumble. Brandon Powe added nine tackles and Sean Fugate added six tackles (2 for loss) and an interception.

MVSU will return home Saturday, Oct. 12 when it hosts Jackson State at 2 p.m. at Rice-Totten Stadium.
