ITTA BENA -- Mississippi Valley State will host Texas Southern on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Rice-Totten Stadium. The Delta Devils (1-8, 1-6 SWAC) will look to rebound from a 47-40 loss last week at Grambling State while Texas Southern is coming off a 31-24 setback against Southern.
MVSU routed the Tigers 34-3 in last year's season finale in Houston. Now, TSU looks to be an improved team, said MVSU head coach Karl Morgan.
"A much improved team over last year," said Morgan. "I've been impressed by what they have done defensively this year. I think offensively they have some more weapons.....I think it's a team on the rise. Their record is 2-7, but they are a much better football team than last year."
Following last week's loss to Grambling, MVSU quarterback Patrick Ivy was named Newcomer of the Week for the second time this season after accounting for four TDs -- two rushing, two passing. Morgan said he has started to see some progression in the junior signal caller.
"I think we're seeing signs of him becoming the guy we thought he could be," Morgan said. "He's done a nice job. He's not totally healthy, and if think if he was totally healthy, his rushing yards (for the season) would be a lot higher."
Next up for MVSU after TSU is Alabama State on Nov. 16, which will be the final game of the season for Valley.
