ITTA BENA -- The Mississippi Valley State women's basketball team will end its 11-day break Wednesday when they travel to take on Memphis (5-5) at the Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The game is scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m.
MVSU (1-7) is coming off a 72-60 loss at Ole Miss and will face a Memphis team that defeated Tennessee Tech, 78-76, in double overtime on Dec. 14. It marked the Tigers' third overtime game this season.
Scouting Memphis
The Tigers have a balanced offensive attack with five players averaging at least eight points per game. Ariel Hearn, who scored 21 against Tennessee Tech, leads the way with 17.7 per game. Asianna Fuqua-Bey averages a team-high 7.6 rebounds per game.
Memphis has won two consecutive games, including a narrow 73-32 defeat of UAB on Dec. 7.
Freshman phenom
MVSU freshman forward Ashley Beals leads the Devilettes in scoring (11.3) and is second in rebounds (5.8). She has scored in double-figures in four games this season with a career-high (20) coming against Northern Illinois on Nov. 12.
Kennedy stepping into the spotlight
MVSU guard Olivia Kennedy has taken advantage of her increased role in her senior season. The McComb, Miss. native is third on the team in scoring (10.1) and poured in double figures in four games this season with a career-high (18) coming at Illinois on Nov. 14. So far this season, she has made a team-high 15 three-pointers.
