Box Score MEMPHIS -- Ashley Beals has already proved to be one of the best newcomers in the SWAC this season.Â
And on Wednesday, the Canton native gave fans another reason to see promise in the Mississippi Valley State women's basketball program.Â
Beals scored a career-high 22 points and 13 rebounds in a 62-51 loss at Memphis at Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The freshman forward made 9-of-13 shot attempts and grabbed 13 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. Her 22 points eclipsed her 20-point effort at Northern Illinois on Nov. 12.Â
Beals and the Devilettes held an early lead, 12-8, but the Tigers went on a 10-0 run in a 3-minute span that put Memphis back in the driver's seat.Â
Valley trailed by as much as 12 points in the first half and went into halftime down 36-29.Â
MVSU cut the lead to 51-46 with less than six minutes left when A'Shanti Weathers converted a 3-point play using a jumper and the ensuing free throw. But that would be as close as the Devilettes would get.Â
Beals and senior forward Jasmyne Sanders both fouled out late in the game.Â
DeRita Silas had 10 points for Valley A'Shanti Weathers chipped in seven.Â
Ariel Hearn was one of three Memphis players to score in double figures. She finished with 26 points and eight rebounds.Â
MVSU will be back in action Dec. 28 when they travel to Arkansas for a 7 p.m. tipoff.Â
