No. 1 Statesmen gets hot late, defeat Delta Devils 9-3

Box Score GREENVILLE, Miss. -- For six innings, Mississippi Valley State stayed right on Delta State's heels in the second meeting between the two schools separated by just 50 miles.

But the No.1-ranked Statesmen scored six late runs Tuesday to upend the Delta Devils, 9-3, at Legion Field to sweep MVSU in the regular season series.

DSU got some help throughout the game with Valley (3-21) committing five errors.

MVSU took an early 3-0 lead thanks to an DSU error and a two-run double by Mark Kaplan in the second inning. But the Statesmen (21-4) responded by scoring three runs in the fourth, seventh and ninth inning.

David Lostra (1-4) took the loss, allowing three earned runs on seven hits and with three strikeouts in 6.2 innings of work. Kaplan and Edmund Cheatham paced the Delta Devils with two hits apiece.

MVSU will host Alabama A&M in a three-game series beginning Saturday at 1 p.m. in Greenville at Legion Field. The teams will play a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Saturday and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
