Box Score NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Mississippi Valley State was a hit away from possibly shocking one of the nation's top teams Wednesday night as Arkansas held off the Delta Devils, 2-1, in the last of the two-game series.
A win would have marked the second straight year the Delta Devils have defeated an SEC opponent.
MVSU (3-23) was one hit away from tying the game in ninth inning with the bases loaded after three consecutive hits from Mark Kaplan, German Hays and Kevin Simmons. But a Luke Brumfield strikeout and a Jonathan Parker pop out ended the Delta Devils' chances of defeating the nation's No. 13 ranked team.
Hays had an RBI-single in the fourth inning that accounted for Valley's lone run of the game. He finished 3-for-4 at the plate.
The Delta Devils had one of their best pitching efforts of the season, allowing no earned runs and six strikeouts behind Montana Kiler (1-5), David Lostra and Kameron Stady.
Valley will be at Alabama State on Friday and Saturday.
