Delta Devils suffer 24-14 loss to Delta State

ITTA BENA -- The 10-year hiatus between Mississippi Valley State and Delta State ended Saturday with the Statesmen coming away with a 24-14 victory over the Delta Devils at Rice-Totten Stadium.

DSU (1-0) put the final touches on the win with just over 4 minutes left when Timothy Foy rushed for a 7-yard TD run to give the Statesmen a controlling 24-14 lead.
Valley had scored earlier in the fourth quarter on a 10-yard pass from Jeremy Collins to Richard Drake, who finished with seven catches for 60 yards and a TD.
Collins, meanwhile, threw a career-high 50 passes, completing 30 of them, for 155 yards with a TD and an interception.
MVSU's Julian Stafford, who was held without a catch Sunday against Florida A&M, led the Delta Devils in both rushing and receiving yards. He finished with 65 yards on the ground and 60 through the air.
Richard Freelon led the Statesmen with 84 rushign yards on 17 carries.
DSU's Travis Champion went 19-of-30 for 225 yards to go with a pair of TDs and interceptions.
Davon Jones had two interceptions for Valley.
MVSU will be back in action next Saturday at Alcorn State.
