Soccer wins second straight

Box Score ITTA BENA, Miss. -- The Mississippi Valley State women's soccer team capped off the weekend with a 5-1 win over Grambling State on Sunday.

In its second straight victory by a score of 5-1, the Devilettes pounded the Lady Tigers with four second half goals. MVSU (2-9-3, 2-2-3 SWAC) scored its first goal of the game near the 40-minute mark in the first half on a corner kick by Hailey Beekman.

Then, just five minutes after halftime, the Devilettes struck again. Ernestina Abambila scored on an assist from Mariana Balboa to give Valley a 2-0 advantage. Things would get worse for GSU about 14 minutes later as Valley got on the scoreboard again -- this time on a Heather Craddock goal assisted by Nykosi Simmons to give the Devilettes a commanding 3-0 lead.

MVSU kept its offensive attack going late in the game, scoring two more goals less in less than four minutes. Simmons scored on a Haley Hendricks assist with a little less than eight minutes to play to give Valley a 4-0 lead.

GSU finally got on the scoreboard two minutes later when Jemila Davis scored a goal to cut Valley's lead to 4-1. But it would be less than a minute later before MVSU answered. Craddock scored her second goal of the game, this one on an assist from Abambila at the 85-minute mark.

Valley finished with 19 shots, including eight on goal while GSU had 21 shots with four on goal.
