Alabama State ends MVSU soccer win streak

MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Mississippi Valley State's Heather Craddock registered a goal for the fourth straight game Friday, but it wasn't enough to send the Devilettes past Alabama State.

The Lady Hornets scored three first half goals on their way to a 3-1 home victory over Valley (2-10-3, 2-3-3 SWAC) to end the Devilettes' two-game win streak.

It took ASU just over seven minutes to strike. Kayla Edwards put the Lady Hornets up 1-0 after she scored a goal on a Shelbi Vienna-Hallam. Then, they struck again six minutes later with another goal by Edwards to put them up 2-0 with just over 13 minutes off the clock.

MVSU, however kept fighting and responded less than four minutes later when Craddock scored a goal using a Mariana Balboa assist to cut the lead to 2-1. It marked Craddock's fifth goal in the last four games.

ASU scored the final goal of the first half -- and the game -- when Vienna-Hallam found the net to put the Lady Hornets up 3-1 at 33:39 mark.

Neither team was able to get on the scoreboard in the second half. Valley's Rita Gyasi had 10 saves and ASU's Kylee Hathaway finished with eight.

MVSU will be at Alabama A&M at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
