PINE BLUFF, Ark. -- Mississippi Valley State was unable to mount a fourth quarter comeback Saturday and suffered a 24-14 loss at Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Golden Lion Stadium.
MVSU fought its way back from a 17-0 deficit, but the Delta Devils missed a pair of field goals and was unable to score more than seven second half points.
UAPB scored all of its touchdowns on touchdown catches by Willie Young, who finished with 10 catches for 175 yards and three touchdowns. He longest touchdown came in the fourth quarter when Ben Anderson connected with the redshirt sophomore for a 59 yard score.
Valley cut the Golden Lions' lead to 17-7 with less than six minutes left in the second quarter when Quantavius Peterson found a sprinting Charlie Crenshaw for a 73-yard touchdown to give the Delta Devils life.
But it would be until late in the fourth quarter before the Delta Devils would find the endzone again. MVSU's Julian Stafford caught a 14-yard pass from Patrick Ivy, who replaced the injured Peterson, at the 5-minute mark in the fourth quarter.
MVSU stopped UAPB on fourth down on the ensuing drive but not before the Golden Lions had drained more than three minutes off the clock.
With just 1:24 left to play, Valley was unable to drive down the field following a series of incomplete passes.
Stafford finished with nine catches for 174 yards and a touchdown. Meanwhile, Peterson completed 9-of-24 passes for 195 yards and a touchdown to go with a pair of interceptions. Ivy completed 5-of-15 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Khalil Young and Terrance Hudson had standout performances. Hudson, a Greenwood native, had seven tackles (2.5 for loss) and 1.5 sacks. Young, a New Orleans native, had 2.5 tackles for loss.
MVSU will have a short turnaround as the Delta Devils will play Thursday at home against Grambling State on ESPNU at 6:30 p.m.
