Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Beals' double-double not enough to beat USM

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Ashley Beals played her best game of the season Wednesday night.

The sophomore forward had a season-best 15 points and 10 rebounds against Southern Miss, making 5-of-12 shots with a pair of blocks.

But, still, it wasn't enough to power the Mississippi Valley State women's basketball squad past Southern Miss as the Lady Eagles upended the Devilettes, 69-51, at Reed Green Coliseum. A'Shanti Weathers also had a season-high 17 points for Valley. The senior standout made 5-of-10 shots, including three triples in the third straight road game for the Devilettes, who will have the next eight days off.

USM (3-0), who led by as many as 21 points, controlled the game through the first half and went into halftime sporting a 40-25 lead. Southern Miss shot 51 percent in the first half.

But, MVSU buckled down in the second half and limited the Lady Eagles to 31 percent shooting.

Christina Reed added eight points and five rebounds for the Devilettes, who shot 37 percent and made 12-of-20 free throws.

Lashrya Cotton (14 points) was one of three USM players to score in double-figures.

MVSU will be on the road at Missouri-Kansas City on Nov. 28 at 1 p.m.
