NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Mississippi Valley State women's basketball team gave Vanderbilt all it could handle in the first half Wednesday night.
The Devilettes trailed the Commodores just 29-20 at halftime, but Vanderbilt withstood MVSU's pesky defensive efforts in the second half in a 63-37 victory at Memorial Gym.
A'Shanti Weathers, who scored in double figures for the fourth time this season, led the Devilettes with 11 points on 3-of-10 shots from the field. Kadesha Floyd added a career-high seven points, as she accounted for one of Valley's five three-point field goals.
MVSU held its SEC opponent to just 39 percent shooting the first half and 7-of-13 from the free throw line. But, the Commodores came out of the locker room hot in the secon half, converting more than 57 percent of its shots.
Kahdejah Stevens had five points while Christina Reed and Ashley Beals chipped in four each for the Devilettes, who will play their first home game Saturday at 3 p.m. against Talladega College at the Leflore County Civic Center in Greenwood. Admission to Saturday's game is free.
