Reed, Beals send Devilettes past Talladega

GREENWOOD, Miss. -- Mississippi Valley State entered Saturday's game against Talladega College hungry for its first win of the season.

And that's exactly what they got.

Ashley Beals and Christina Reed each posted a double-double to send MVSU to a 59-38 route over visiting Talladega College at the Leflore County Civic Center.

"I'm proud of their effort," said MVSU head coach Elvis Robinson. "We did a good job rebounding the ball and converting some shots near the basket."

Beals finished just one point shy of tying her career high with 21 points and 10 rebounds. It was the second double-double of the season for the Canton, Miss. native who also contributed a pair of blocks and steals.

While Beals came just shy of outpacing her career mark, Reed completed the task. She had a career-high 20 points and 11 rebounds surpassing her previous record of 13 and nine, respectively. The Indianola, Miss. native was efficient, converting on 10-of-15 shots as she continues to excel in her increased role in the offense.

Talladega opened the game on a 7-2 but it didn't take long before the Devilettes snatched the lead the momentum. Valley took the lead , 12-11, on a Beals layup with more than 12 minutes left in the first half and never relinquished it. MVSU went on a 25-6 run and went into halftime with a healthy 37-17 lead.

Talladega only got as close as 18 points in the second half and the Devilettes marched on to the victory.

The Devilettes made 51 percent of their shots and beat Talladega in the rebounding category 59 to 26.

MVSU will be in Clarsksdale next Saturday, Dec. 13, at 3 p.m. against Philander Smith College. The game will be played at The Pinnacle on the campus of Coahoma Community College. Admission will be free.
