Box Score MOORHEAD, Miss. -- An eighth inning homerun ended the Mississippi Valley State baseball team's hopes of winning its first game of the season Wednesday evening.Â
Morehead State's Brandon Rawe hit a deep home run to left left field that turned out to be the winning run that secured a 3-2 win for the Eagles over MVSU in its first home game of the season at its newly-adopted home field on the campus of Mississippi Delta Community College.Â
With the loss, the Delta Devils fall to 0-4.Â
Valley took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI-single by Arrington Smith, but the Greenville native was called out attempting to advance to second base.Â
The Eagles (2-3) responded in the top of the second inning with two runs to take a 2-1 lead. The Delta Devils responded in the bottom half of the fourth inning when Xzavier Franklin's fly out brought the tying run in.Â
After three scoreless innings, Rawe's homerun gave the Eagles all they needed to leave with a victory.Â
MVSU's Connor Sheppeard (0-1) came in to relieve starter Trent Kinney in the sixth inning and gave up three hits and the game-deciding homerun. Kinney worked the first five innings, giving up five hits and two earned runs with a pair of strikeouts.Â
The Delta Devils will be in Florida starting Friday competing in the Snowball Baseball Classic against Iowa, Ball State, Northwestern and Kansas. MVSU opens up the tournament Friday against Iowa.Â
