Shanks gets 250th win in weekend series at Alcorn State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 LORMAN, Miss. -- It took longer than he expected, but Mississippi Valley State head baseball coach Doug Shanks led the Delta Devils to a milestone win on Saturday at Alcorn State.

MVSU won one of three games at Alcorn, but in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday, Shanks won his 250th career game with a 8-6 win over the Braves.

"It's been a struggle, but this is a great win for not only me but for my team as well," said Shanks who has won all 250 games at MVSU. "Better days are ahead for us."

The Braves hit a grandslam late in the first game to capture a 5-3 win on Saturday before Valley won its first game of the season with a 8-6 victory. Alcorn closed out the series with a 10-8 win on Sunday.

Game 1 (Alcorn State 5, MVSU 3)
Alcorn scored all five of its runs in the seventh inning with four of them coming on a grandslam by Jared Listach. MVSU racked up 13 hits and had a RBI-single in the third inning by Tyji Hawkins and another one by Chase Dicharry in the fourth inning. Connor Sheppeard gave up four earned runs on four hits and one strikeout in the loss.

Game 2 (MVSU 8, Alcorn State 6)
Tyji Hawkins accounted for three of MVSU's 15 hits in the game, as Valley captured its first win of the season. Conner Sheppeard pitched the entire game for Valley, giving up six earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts. MVSU's Arrington Smith was walked four times throughout the game and Hawkins and Kalik May each had two RBIs.

Game 3 (Alcorn State 10, MVSU 8)
MVSU's Xzavier Franklin finished with three hits while Kalik May and Parker Thurman each had two RBIs in the loss to Alcorn State. Ryan Goddard suffered the loss, giving up five earned runs on two hits in two innings of work. The Delta Devils had three errors in the game.

MVSU will be at Arkansas on Tuesday for a doubleheader beginning at 3:05 p.m.
