Box Score 4 MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Mississippi Valley State baseball team played its first conference series of the season Saturday and Sunday at Alabama State, with the Delta Devils falling in all four games.
The Hornets defeated the Delta Devils 6-3 and 6-0 on Saturday before closing out the series with 4-0 and 9-7 wins on Sunday.
Saturday: Alabama State 6, MVSU 3
MVSU's Alex Bravo had an RBI-single in the fourth inning to tie the game at one, but the Hornets racked up four runs in the seventh inning to distance themselves from the Delta Devils (0-12, 0-4 SWAC). Bravo, who had two RBIs, and Xzavier Franklin had two hits apiece to lead Valley. Connor Sheppeard (0-3) gave up three earned runs with three strikeouts.
Saturday: Alabama State 6, MVSU 0
Valley's Arrington Smith finished with three hits (two doubles) and Alex Bravo added a pair of hits in the loss. Trent Kinney (0-2) gave up three earned runs with one strikeout in 4.2 innings of work.
Sunday: Alabama State 4, MVSU 0
For the second straight game, MVSU's Arrington Smith finished with three hits while Parker Thurman and Tyji Hawkins chipped in two each. Jonathan Parker gave up four earned runs with four strikeouts in eight innings on the mound.
Sunday: Alabama State 9, MVSU 7
MVSU rebounded from a late 9-3 deficit and pounded out four eighth inning runs, but still came up short in the final game of the series. Terrance Steele began Valley's late run with a two-run single to right field. Xzavier Franklin, who came in to pinch hit for Chris McWright, responded next with a RBI-single before Alex Bravo's sacrifice fly accounted for the final run of the inning.
The Delta Devils had a season-high 14 hits, led by Tyji Hawkins' career-high of three. Steele, meanwhile, had three RBIs for the Delta Devils. Hawkins suffered the loss, giving up four earned runs with one strikeout in four innings of work.
Arrington keeps hitting streak alive
MVSU freshman Arrington Smith kept his hitting streak going over the weekend, extending it to 11 games. The Greenville, Miss. native has had a hit in all but one game (Feb. 14 at Dallas Baptist). He has put more than one hit in five games this season.
