ITTA BENA, Miss. -- Now is when it really counts for the Mississippi Valley State football team.
With two non-conference games under its belt, MVSU now prepares to travel to Alabama State for a 5 p.m. kickoff on Saturday. It'll mark the first SWAC game of the season for the Delta Devils (1-1) who are looking to bounce back after a tough loss last week at Illinois State.
MVSU vs. ASU seriesThe Hornets (1-1), meanwhile, held off Tennessee State last week, 27-21. It'll mark the 41st meeting between the teams and the Hornets hold a 24-15-1 series lead. Valley last defeated ASU 10-3 in 2009.
About the Hornets The Hornets are led by running back Malcolm Cyrus, who leads the team with 253 rushing yards. He needs just 78 yards to move into the top 10 in career rushing yards in school history. He was named SWAC Offensive Player of the Week after rushing for 170 yards and 86 receiving yards.
Meanwhile, ASU quarterback Daniel Duhart has thrown for 448 yards and three touchdowns with two interceptions. On defense, Torrey Davis has been one of their most consistent players with 19 tackles (4.5 for loss) and two sacks through two games.
Four players battle for QB jobA total of four MVSU quarterbacks saw action last week at Illinois State, but now head coach Rick Comegy said he and his staff have settled on who will get the nod this week. "We will now (settle on a starting quarterback," said Comegy. "They can't see they didn't get a chance in a big game. Now we can move forward."
Patrick Ivy started both games this season, but Carl Davis, Dontrinell Scott and Quantavius Peterson have all played as well. Scott, a redshirt sophomore transfer from the University of Memphis, completed all three of his pass attempts for nine yards last week. Ivy threw for 21 yards and an interception in less than a quarter of action.
Davon Jones having standout senior season Senior linebacker Davon Jones has racked up a team-high 17 tackles (4.5 for loss), two sacks and an interception. The Phoenix, Ariz. native has had a sack in each game this season and had a returned an interception for 17 yards last week at Illinois State.
Comegy's take on last week's game:"They had good speed, they were strong. You learn from that and you get better from that, at least we should get better from that type of game."

"(The team's) confidence is still there. We didn't give them a morale beating in the locker room (following last week's game). We haven't started any conference games yet. We're out to win the SWAC ….and that's the bottom line. So when they walk out of there, I want them to walk out of there with their heads high. They have to understand that there's going to be times in life that you're going to have those bumps in bruises…..We think we have a bunch of guys who want to play this game, who love this team and want to represent Mississippi Valley State University…."
Comegy on approaching practice different this week:"I think when you lose a game, you have to change something up. It can't just be the same way and all then all of sudden it becomes stale. I think we have to change some things up – have some more inside drills or change practice how we start (and) how we finish so that they can see a different flavor. I think they want that; I think they need to see a different picture right now, and then be able to go into this game (vs. Alabama State).
