Scott, Stafford honored by SWACMississippi Valley State quarterback Dontrinell Scott was named SWAC Newcomer of the Week and wide receiver Julian Stafford was tabbed SWAC Offensive Player of the Week following their performances at Alabama State last week.
Â
Scott, a redshirt sophomore transfer from the University of Memphis, started at quarterback for the first time this season and completed 12-of-20 passes for 147 yards. Meanwhile, Stafford had 12 catches for a career-high 222 yards and a touchdown.
Â
"It shows the level of talent Julian Stafford has," said MVSU head coach Rick Comegy. "He's a team leader and the guys rally around him; they like him."
Â
Stafford less than 200 yards away from milestoneSo far this season, Julian Stafford leads the SWAC in both receptions (17) and receiving yards (347). He is also fourth in the SWAC in All-Purpose Yards with 146 per game. The Memphis native needs just 180 more receiving yards to reach 2,000 for his career.
Â
Ivy expected to get the nod at quarterbackAfter starting the first two games of the season, senior quarterback Patrick Ivy came off the bench in last week's loss at Alabama State. However, he replaced Dontrinell Scott and threw for a team-high 176 yards and two touchdowns in limited time.
Â
"We're going to go with Ivy at this point in this game, and see what he can do and see if he can man the team" said MVSU head coach Rick Comegy. "I saw the way the offensive line ran to the line when he broke the huddle. They jogged up there as opposed to walking to the line, so he may have that inspiration that we need to carry this team forward down the line."
Â
Ford records first touchdown of careerSenior wide receiver Trey Ford caught his first-ever touchdown pass last week at Alabama State on a 46-yard strike from Patrick Ivy.
Â
Ireland, Pegues gets first start of his careerFreshman cornerback Emory Ireland (Hattiesburg, Miss.) started last week for the first time this season. He finished with two tackles and an interception, also the first of his career.
Â
Freshman safety Mark Pegues earned the first start of his career Saturday at Alabama State with the injury to Jeremy Johnson and Terrance Hudson. Mark Pegues, whose older brothers DeMarcus and Demarius also play for MVSU, had eight tackles (six solo).
Â
Dobson sees increased workloadWith the injury to running back Jerrell Moore last week, redshirt sophomore Jeremy Dobson carried the ball 11 times for 55 yards. It marked a career-high outing for the Byram, Miss. native who this season is splitting time with a stable of running backs.
