Box Score BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mississippi Valley State collected the 2015 Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season crown Friday afternoon after defeating Alcorn State, 10-0.
During the match, Heather Craddock scored a game-high four goals, while Haley Hendricks and Laadi Issaka each chipped in two scores and Amberly Halstead and Mariana Balbao each contributed one goal.
The Lady Braves' Viktoriya Guardado and Phoenix Mihayloua each registered shots on target, but it was not enough as Rita Gyasi walked away credited another shutout game.
The Devilettes' journey to this point started rocky as MVSU lost its first three games to Oral Roberts, Southeastern Louisiana and Louisiana-Monroe. The Devilettes picked up their first victory after defeating Texas-Rio Grande Valley, 2-0. From there, MVSU managed one more non-conference win against Delta State.
Nykosi Simmons led the Devilettes in their first win against a fellow SWAC team, scoring five goals over Arkansas-Pine Bluff. This match was not counted toward their conference record. The squad would go on to finish the game, 8-2.
MVSU later pushed past Southern (4-0), Prairie View A&M (6-1), Texas Southern (3-1), UAPB (4-0), Alabama A&M (5-1), Alabama State (5-1), Grambling State (6-0) and ALCN (10-0).
The Devilettes registered their only tie of the season against Jackson State. The double overtime game closed, 2-2. And, the only SWAC team to conquer MVSU was Howard.
In the 4-1 loss to the Bison, Ernestina Abambila registered the lone goal, while Balbao contributed an assist.
Simmons holds a conference-high 23 goals and is ranked first in many SWAC categories including shots, points and goals. She is also ranked nationally by the NCAA in total goals, total points, points per game and goals per game.
In the beginning of the season, after the preaseason results, Head Coach N. Fabio Boatang stated, "Soccer resume is not written in the boardroom. As we say in my country (Ghana), 'Agoro ne fom – the field will decide."
MVSU will enter the 2015 soccer tournament as the number one seed.
