Lorman, Miss. – The Mississippi Valley State University Delta Devils Baseball team traveled to Lorman, Mississippi, to face the Alcorn State University Braves in their final conference series. The pressure was insurmountable, as the winner clinched the 4
th seed in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Eastern Division and final place in the conference baseball tournament.
The Braves took all three contests over the Delta Devils; game one Alcorn 18-7, game two's final was 12-9 and the rubber match ended in seven innings, with a score of 13-3.
Game One:
The Braves started the scoring in the first inning, to take an early 2-0 lead, however it was the second inning that proved to be problematic for MVSU, as Alcorn scored 11 runs. In the top of the fourth inning, MVSU had four runners to cross the home plate, taking the score to 13-4. Alcorn's Carroll homered over the left field wall to push the Braves up 14-4. In the top of the sixth, a single to the shortstop scored Kalik May (14-5). It was in the top of the seventh that MVSU scored their final two runs. ASU scored four more runs before the conclusion of the contest.
Game Two:
Mississippi Valley and Alcorn sparred in game two of the doubleheader, with the weight appearing to be profoundly in favor of the Braves. Aside from a 3-1 lead gained in the top of the second, the game belonged to Alcorn. ASU scored four runs in the bottom of the second and never relinquished it. Entering the top of the ninth, MVSU trailed the Braves, 12-5. The Delta Devils rally fell short, as they were only able to score four runs en route to dropping the contest.
Game Three:
The Delta Devils runs came in the top of the first, third and fourth, while the Braves dominated the diamond in the first, second, third and fourth, prior to securing a ten run lead in the sixth. The second inning proved to be the Achilles heel for the Delta Devils as Alcorn scored six of their 13 runs.
