ITTA BENA, Miss. – The Mississippi Valley State University Devilettes earned a 6-0 shutout victory over the Delta State University Lady Statesmen on Friday night.
Nikosi Simmons and Laadi Issaka made their marks in the shutout with two goals apiece. Simmons first goal came on a pass from Issaka at the 21:03 mark of the game. Issaka scored the second goal for the Devilettes (31:36) on an assist from Mariana Balbao. MVSU held a 2-0 lead going into the halftime break.
Balbao scored a goal of her own on an assist by Karenth Zabala at the 49:17 ticks into the contest. Simmons scored her second goal (75:57) on an assist by Katelyn Denton. Issaka nailed her final goal at the 76:53 mark on a pass from Ya'Kira Wilson. The final goal of the game was an amazing free kick by Ernestina Abambila with less than 15 minutes remaining.
Rita Gyasi took the win (shutout) in the goalie's box, recording one save, while facing only one shot by the Lady Statesmen. Sydney Newport also recorded a save for the Devilettes.
Delta State's goalkeeper Taylor made eight saves, while allowing six goals.
Mississippi Valley tallied 18 shots, with 14 being on goal. The Lady Statesmen had two shots, both on goal.
Head Coach Fabio Boateng stated, "I couldn't have asked for a better birthday present from the team. It was a good team performance, I was particularly happy with how we defended as a team."
On Sunday, the Devilettes will travel to Conway, Arkansas, to take on the Bears of University of Central Arkansas. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
