Devilettes End Season at Jackson State

JACKSON – The Devilettes of Mississippi Valley were unable to overcome the Lady Tigers of Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi, dropping the contest 3-0. The set scores were: 25-20, 25-17 and 25-18.

In the opening set, MVSU took the opening point on a kill by Illiya Trahan. Jackson followed with a point of their own to tie the score at one. JSU scored an additional point to take the lead. This was followed by an attacking error by the Lady Tigers, knotting the score once again. An ace by Kalin Barnes put the Devilettes up by one. A five-point run by JSU placed the Lady Tigers up 7-3; Trahan
came forward with a dynamic attack to score the kill-point for Mississippi Valley. Hayle Means scored on an ace to close the gap to 7-5. Despite a brilliant rally, Jackson State took the opening set.

The second set wasn't as close as the first, however there were sparks of brilliance from the Devilettes. MVSU opened the set with a three-point run, going up 3-0. Jackson struck back with two-points of their own, closing the Devilettes margin to one, prior to a kill for Trahan.  JSU took the next two points to tie it up at four; however, MVSU was undeterred and fought back, scoring two of their own. Jackson scored four straight to retake the lead. Trahan came to Mississippi Valley's rescue once again with a well-placed kill. The back and forth continued but JSU took the second.

The third and final set was more in favor of the Lady Tigers. MVSU scored the first point before Jackson State scored the next two. A kill by Marissa Chalmers tied the set at two. The scoring was passionate with Mississippi Valley going up 11-6. Up 13-8, MVSU was in the driver's seat, until JSU scored nine unanswered points. The Devilettes continued to battle but the Lady Tigers had the momentum behind them.

Mississippi Valley's loss occurred in the location of the 2016 Southwestern Athletic Conference Volleyball Tournament, which takes place this weekend.
