EAST LANSING, Mich. – The contest between the Delta Devils and the Spartans began rocky on both ends of the court. MVSU's Isaac Williams missed a go-ahead three-pointer at the 19:32 mark, Amos Given pulled down the offensive rebound for the Delta Devils. Neither team scored until the 16:29 mark, when Michigan State nailed a jumper. With 15:32 on the clock Williams knotted the game at two-all.
The Spartans scored five-consecutive points to make the score 7-2, undeterred, Mississippi Valley's Jamal Watson tipped in splendid layup to aid the Delta Devils' offensive strategy. A three-pointer by Darrell Riley locked the score at seven with 13:12 remaining in the half.
MSU scored 4-6 of their free throws to contribute to the 48-23 score going into overtime. Ronald Strother paced MVSU in the opening half with six-points. Exiting the locker room, the Delta Devils were forced to improve upon their pointless streak, going 3:14 without a point to end the first half.
The second half started with Strother replacing Williams in the lineup and Given putting up a layup to cut the Spartans' lead to 23. MVSU held MSU without a point in the second for one-minute and ten-seconds, at which time the Spartans demanded attention with a three-point basket.
With the clock ticking ominously in the background, Michigan held Mississippi Valley scoreless for five complete minutes, while building a sizable lead. With 8:31 remaining, the task before the Delta Devils was daunting at best as they stared a 42-point deficit in the face.
Down by 45, Williams remained vigilant for the Delta Devils with a three-pointer to shorten the gap 86-44 with 6:54 remaining in the contest. Williams followed the three with a layup for MVSU, closing the deficit to 40-points.
The Delta Devils were unable to add many points for a little over two-minutes, resulting in the Spartans continuing to build on the sustainable lead. With less than three minutes on the clock, the Delta Devils maintained defensive pressure, yet MSU was able to hit 100-points with 36-seconds remaining in the contest.
Strother paced the team with 12-points and one steal. Given tallied 10-points and four rebounds. Watson added five rebounds, one assist and one steal.
Mississippi Valley will be in action again when they face the University of Massachusetts-Lowell on November 22 at 6:00 p.m.
