MVSU Softball Suffers a Rocky Start

HAMMOND, La. - MVSU opened the season at the Southeastern Louisiana Tourney, with a 10-2 loss to Tennessee State in five innings. In their second contest of the day, Nicholls State defeated the Devilettes 11-0.

Game One: Tennessee State

MVSU dropped their first contest of the tournament with a 10-2 loss to Tennessee State. The Devilettes and Lady Tigers both finished with six hits and three errors, however TSU was able to capitalize on every opportunity.

Sophomore pitcher Rebekah Clinton (0-1) took the loss for Mississippi Valley. She threw one strikeout, allowed three hits and six runs. Ane Pahulu, led MVSU in hitting, in three at bats; she landed two hits and one run. Jordan Brown and Ikeyia Alexander each recorded one RBIs.

Both teams were scoreless and hitless in the first inning, with MVSU almost going three-up, three-down in the inning, with the exception of a walk by Alexandra Dobbins. Tenn. State did go three-up, three down in the bottom of the inning. In the top of the second, Ikeyia Alexander loosened the stitches on the ball, knocking a homer into right center field, taking the Devilettes up 1-0.

MVSU was held scoreless during the second and third innings, with their final run coming in the fourth. With the bases loaded, Brown walked, advancing Pahulu home.

Game Two: Nicholls State

With a decisive victory, the Lady Colonels held the Devilettes hitless and scoreless for five innings. Monica Rivera took the loss for MVSU in the pitcher's circle.

In the first, NSU scored three runs to take 3-0 lead. The second both teams were scoreless, however in the third Nicholls scored seven runs. In the fourth, the Lady Colonels extended their lead by scoring one more run.

The Devilettes were remained scoreless in the top of the fifth, to end the contest.
