Devilettes Falter on Day One of Louisiana Tech Contest

RUSTON, La. - The Mississippi Valley State University softball team were overtaken by Huskies of Houston Baptist University, 12-4, in a run- rule decision. With a score of 8-0, Texas State defeated MVSU in a back-to-back run rule decision.
 
As the home team, the Devilettes began the game on defense, holding Houston Baptist to one run in the top of the first. In the bottom of the first, MVSU exploded from inside the batters' box, scoring two runs.
 
The Huskies were a bit more problematic in the second, scoring three runs while holding the Devilettes scoreless. HBU landed one in the third, slowly building their momentum.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, Mississippi Valley scored their final two points of the contest. Houston Baptist scored seven runs in the fifth to secure their victory. 
 
The Devilettes finished with four runs, on five hits and managed their mistakes; earning only two errors.  
 
Deja Talton scored two of Mississippi Valley's runs; she also recorded one hit. Dejanae Gage broke her bat as she tallied three hits and one RBI.  Kailynn Dunn also scored for MVSU.
 
Rebekah Clinton started the contest for the Devilettes in the pitching spot, relinquished 10 hits, seven runs, six errors, one walk and five strikeouts.  Monica Rivera entered to relieve Clinton, gave up three runs on five hits and five errors.
 
Game Two:
 
Shayanne Downing served as the pitcher on record for the Devilettes; she allowed nine hits, eight runs, and four walks. She is also credited with three strikeouts.
 
Texas State scored four in the first and an additional four in the third. The game remained scoreless during the fourth and fifth innings.
