RUSTON, La. - At 1220 degrees Fahrenheit the substance aluminum is melted and made into bats. SWAC coaching stalwart Lee Smith and his versatile staff blazed the softball diamond even hotter to scorch the Lady Bruins of Belmont College 10-5 for their first win the season.
Under the microscopic eye of hitting coach and "Valley" legend Shanika Randle, the Devilettes recorded 12 hits giving starting pitcher Shyanne Downing a comfortable cushion for her first win of the season.
Alexandra Dobbins started off the scoring in the second inning slicing a double to right centerfield, bringing home Annaisa Sanchez. Dobbins was then brought home by a Holly Brown single.
The scoring did not cease as the 6
th inning proved to be the knockout for the opposition as the Devilettes put 5 runs on the board. Deja Talton turned on an inside pitch, lacing a double in the left centerfield gap and was brought home by Dejanae Gage. Gage, Talton, Sanchez, and Daly all crossed the threshold of home plate delivering the proverbial finishing move to the opponent.
Kailyn Dunn made the All-Tournament team for Mississippi Valley.
The Devilettes will face The University of Memphis in the Mississippi Gulf Coast Classic in Gulfport, Mississippi February 26 at 12:30 pm.
