ITTA BENA, Miss. – The Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State University hosted the Lady Hornets of Alabama State University, to start the second half of conference play. The Devilettes fell to the Lady Hornets 79-51.
In the opening quarter, with 4:38 remaining on the clock, Alabama State was up 11-8 over the Devilettes. Zemoria Jernigan proved to be a driving force in the opening minutes, recording six points in five minutes. Durriya Sampson was pacing the Lady Hornets with five points, when the first media was called. At the conclusion of the period, MVSU trailed 19-13, with Jernigan remaining the leading scorer.
With 6:52 minutes remaining in the half, Mississippi Valley dug deep to keep the contest close. Christina Reed took the driver seat in the second, pacing MVSU with seven points, four rebounds and two steals. At the midway point, the Devilettes were down 39-27. Reed was able to improve to 11 points, six rebounds, two steals and one assist.
The third, Mississippi Valley continued to battle the Lady Hornets, refusing to give an inch. Jernigan demanded attention on the floor as the leading scorer of the contest entering the fourth quarter, with 17 points. Reed closely followed with 16.
All eyes turned to the fourth quarter, the final ten minutes, ASU held a 57-40 lead over MVSU. Still maintaining a dominant presence in the paint, the Devilettes began to torch their way back into the contest. The Lady Hornets took the contest in the fourth.
Jernigan finished with 19 points, three rebounds; while Reed added 18 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists. Ashley Beals tallied eight points, six rebounds and two assists.
Mississippi Valley will be back in action on February 8 at 5:30 pm, when they host the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A & M University.
