Devilettes Set Bats on Fire in Conference Opener

ITTA BENA – The Mississippi Valley State softball team opened their conference season hosting the Lady Golden Lions of the University of Arkansas – Pine Bluff.
 
The Devilettes held the Lady Golden Lions scoring in the opening two innings, while scoring in both.
 
In the bottom of the first, Deja Talton singled to score Jahcenda Garrett, taking MVSU up 1-0. In the second, the Devilettes put on a homerun derby. Ikeyia Alexander stepped into the box and sent a long ball over the left field fence. Alexandra Dobbins homered to centerfield.
 
In the top of the third, UAPB was able to get a runner in to close the gap, 3-1. The celebration was short leaved because in the bottom of the inning (third), Mississippi Valley continued to dominate the game. Dejanae Gage homered over the center fence. Sharia Comie doubled to left field to score Kailyn Dunn. With the bases loaded, Jordan Brown knocked a powerful ball into the right corner for an inner park homer. On the play she earned RBIs for Ane Pahulu, Ikeyia Alexander and Annaisa Sanchez.
 
In the fourth, the Lady Golden Lions roared back into the contest scoring seven runs. In the bottom of the inning, a single by Alexander into center field scored two runners.
 
The final run of the contest was score by UAPB in the top of the sixth.
 
The Devilettes finished the contest with 11 runs, 10 hits and three errors while the Lady Golden Lions tallied nine runs on 10 hits.
 
The two teams will finish up the series in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 1:00/3:30 pm.
