ITTA BENA – The Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils were unable to overcome the Tigers of Jackson State, falling 16-5 in seven innings.
The Tigers were able to take an early lead in the opening inning, going up 2-0. Scoring an additional run in the second, Jackson held a 3-0 advantage, however Mississippi Valley was able to score one run in the second to shorten the lead. Cole Gullett singled to score Gabriel Waddell.
In the fourth, Jackson State landed a grand slam homerun to fully take over the contest. The Delta Devils were able to score two runs in the bottom of the fourth to chip away at the Tigers lead. Fredrick Spencer landed a beautiful single to score Gullett before crossing the home plate on an error by the Jackson State defense.
Jackson score one in the fifth, prior to Mississippi Valley tallying two in the sixth. Gullett singled and advanced to third on the throw, scoring Marcus Jones on the play. Drew Wheeler stepped into the batter's box and landed a standup double to score Gullett.
The Tigers ran away with the contest in the seventh, scoring eight runs. With an 11-run spread the contest ended in seven innings.
The rubber match is scheduled for tomorrow at 1:00 pm.
