Ypsilanti, Mich. – The Delta Devils of Mississippi Valley State University opened their 2016 campaign at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. MVSY dropped the contest 61-14.
The opening half was totally in favor of the Eagles of EMU, with several bright spots from the Delta Devils.
In the first quarter Eastern Michigan was able to accumulate 21 points, while holding the Delta Devils scoreless. MVSU remained scoreless in the second, however EMU was able to add an additional seven points to end the half 28-0.
The third half proved to be a breakout round for the Eagles as they put up 26 points while holding Mississippi Valley scoreless.
The fourth quarter was totally in favor of the Delta Devils as they outscored Eastern Michigan 14-7. At the 12:28 mark of the fourth, Joshua Banks struck paydirt to land the Delta Devils on the board with a 13-yard pass form Austin Bray. Ruben Piraquive added the extra point to cap an eight play, 85-yard drive. With 5:35 remaining, Austin Bray found the end zone on an one-yard quarterback keeper. Piraquive added the extra point to bring MVSU to 14-points.
Charlie Crenshaw paced Mississippi Valley's rushing game with six attempts for 22-yards. In addition to his touchdown, Banks led MVSU with 59 reception yards on four receptions.
Defensively, Mark Pegues had a field day with nine total tackles, eight of which were solo. Marquis Green, a pre-season SWAC first team selection added seven total tackles (four solo; three assists) for the Delta Devils. Pegues and Green also recorded one breakup each; Pegues also had one quarterback hurry. Jordan Freeman and Khalil Young each added seven tackles. Freeman recorded two solo and five assists, while Young tallied three solo and four assists.
On special teams, Justin Read recorded 266 yards on eight punts. On kickoffs, Nicholas Jacquemin tallied 217 yards on four kicks.
Mississippi Valley will open their home season with Alabama A & M University on September 10
th at 4:00 p.m.
