ITTA BENA, Miss. – It was the weekend for Mississippi Valley State to host Prairie View A & M University. On Saturday it was football and today it was the Devilettes volleyball team's turn.
The hour and a half contest started with Mississippi Valley's Kalin Barnes having first serve. The Devilettes' aggressive play caught the visiting Lady Panthers off guard; causing Mokeysha Shanklin (PVAMU) to state, "They're really trying us."
In the beginning of the second, Mississippi Valley held a small lead over the Lady Panthers. Prairie View was able to climb back into the driver's seat due to several ball-handling errors by the Devilettes. During this time many of the points earned for Mississippi Valley were from the incredible attacks made by Barnes, Cynthia Richardson, and Marissa Chalmers. Sets were nicely executed by Jaime Polk.
By set three it was clear the Devilettes came to play. Each team was point for point until Nadia Crawford took to the floor to serve. Her first serve ended with a kill from Barnes. The Lady Panthers' Larissa Martinez had an attack error that resulted in a point lead over PV for 8-9. Much of the set followed the same pattern.
With the third set tied 22-22 the Devilettes were proving Shanklin's word true, however PVAMU was able to edge out MVSU 28-26.
