LORMAN, Miss. (Men's Basketball) – The Delta Devils' continued to improve in conference play, with their latest victim being the Braves of Alcorn State. MVSU drove past ASU 84-77 to a 2-2 conference record.
Marcus Romain and Rashaan Surles powered down the court with phenomenal passing action to clear a path for Romain to score the first points of the contest. The Delta Devils should be known for ball handling and fast action that could mimic the Harlem Globetrotters.
With 10:45 remaining, Romain made one-of-two baskets from the charity strip. A basket by Riley assisted by Surles took Mississippi Valley into the lead. The Braves were able to regain the lead, however Riley's free throws close the gap by two-points. A defensive touch took the ball out of bounds in favor the Delta Devils. At halftime, Alcorn maintained a one point, 34-33 advantage.
TaJay Henry was at the basket waiting when Romain sent him the ball, like magic, landing the first points of the half for MVSU. In perfect position Surles pulled down the rebound that led to Kylan Phillips' domination of the court en route to the goal.
Henry's free throws took Mississippi ahead by one. That victory was short lived when Alcorn scored again. Riley scored a three to bring the fans to their feet with a resounding roar.
At the 11:20 mark, the Delta Devils were up 53-47. As Head Coach Andre Payne yelled "flex" the ball is moved around, meanwhile Ronald Strothers is positioned at under the rim, ready to demonstrate a great layup.
With the Valley section is AMPED, Strothers is at the line, making one of two.Jabari Alex's layup to gave the Delta Devils their 66th point. Alcorn attempted to shuck and jive Romain down the court, however his long legs were too quick for them to handle. With a 10-point lead the Mississippi Valley refused to slow down. Even as he fell to the ground Phillips landed a brilliant basket.
With 42 ticks remaining, Isaac Williams is at the line, without hesitation the ball goes in like a cashed check. The Braves fouled Surles, sending him to the line. With both shots making a swooshing sound entering the net, Alcorn State fans started to exit the gym.
The Delta Devils travel on to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where they will face the Jaguars of Southern University on Monday, January 16 at 7:30 p.m.
