GRAMBLING – After breezing past the Lady Tigers of Texas Southern and Jackson State, Mississippi Valley turned their attention to the Grambling State Lady Tigers. The Devilettes were unable to overcome their final set of Lady Tigers, dropping the contest 88-67.
It was a "Tale of Two Halves," in the Fredrick C. Hobdy Arena, where the entire first and second were heavily influenced by Grambling State. Entering the locker room for the break, the score was 52-29, in favor of the Lady Tigers.
Offensively, the team struggled to find their footing through the opening two periods. There were stretches where the Devilettes' shots refused to drop, while GSU continued to nail clutch baskets.
MVSU exited the break focused on a comeback victory, Kristy Parker nailed a jumper to begin turning the tide in Mississippi Valley's favor. The Devilettes refused to stop fighting, putting up 15-points in the third, while holding the Lady Tigers to 17.
Entering the fourth, Mississippi Valley knew the task ahead of them was daunting, as they had to overcome a 25-point deficit. The Devilettes settled down and played their game in the final 10. They only allowed GSU 19-points, while blazing to 23-points.
Ashley Beals paced the Devilettes with 27-points, eight-rebounds, and two steals, Parker tallied 14-points, four-rebounds, two assists and one steal.
Mississippi Valley heads home to rest and prepare for the Lady Bulldogs of Alabama A&M University; scheduled for February 4. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
